During the
Byzantine Empire jewelry played an important role in
expressing one’s status. In 529 AD Emperor Justinian made
laws regulating the wearing and usage of jewelry, later to
be called the Justinian Code. The law writes that
sapphires, emeralds and pearls are reserved for the
emperor's use but free men could wear a gold ring. This
certainly shows how important jewelry and gems were in this
time period. The Empire was wealthy with gold mines located
in many regions and trading between East and West. Thus,
only the wealthy could afford the jewelry.
This
workshop will show participants how to capture an open link
in various shapes and sizes with St. Petersburg chain and
then switch to peyote to fill the piece with “jewels”
(beads). We will also discuss how to determine the count for
the size and shape of the link. |
