Leonardo Fibonacci of
Pisa was an Italian mathematician
responsible for discovering a number
pattern. It is called the Fibonacci
sequence. The rotational and radiational
spiraling components of growth are equal
and in cyclical order. This proportional
growth rate is called the Golden Ratio.
You can see this pattern in computer
algorithms, pinecones, branches of a
tree, flower petals, an unfurling fern,
the curling of waves, and even within
your own body. Piano keys represent the
golden ratio: there are 8 white keys and
5 black keys. The eight white keys
define a full octave while the black
keys are laid out in groups of 2’s and
3’s. The series 2:3:5:8 is the beginning
of the Fibonacci sequence.
Nancy has taken the
Fibonacci sequence -
0:1:1:2:3:5:8:13:21:34 into beading. The
necklace pendant is a gentle sine wave
passing around a core of crystals and
pearls with a rope of repeating
Fibonacci numbers. The bracelet is an
exciting combination of Nancy’s three
favorite stitches in one round: Peyote,
Herringbone and Netting. The Fibonacci
sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5 translates into
peyote; peyote; herringbone; netting;
netting! It makes the golden spiral of a
sea shell!
